Genghis Barbie: Amp it Up! (2013)

When it comes to amazing, sparkling, high energy albums Genghis Barbie never disappoints.

If you have never encountered Genghis Barbie, prepare to have your mind blown.

Genghis Barbie is a horn quartet whose members are all conservatory-trained, highly skilled, and super fabulous women. They are self-described as “the leading post-feminist feminist all-female horn experience.” All the members have stage names such as Velvet Barbie and Alpine Barbie, and they all currently perform in big-name orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony.

That’s not all! Their most recent album “Amp it up!” is a cutting-edge pop-classical mix that covers artists such as Imogen Heap and Beyonce. The piece that really caught my ear was a song by Imogen Heap (an edgy techno-pop artist) called Aha! The arrangement is by David Marshall of Central Washington University and the vocals are done by Velvet Barbie.

  1. I am always interested in how classical groups can find new ways to bring in the average consumer. The personas developed by each individual and the groups overall edgy vibe goes a long way, especially when paired with their ridiculous level of training and performance. This song was also a good choice; it was huge when it came out, and I have heard many versions of it from the original, to this one, and vocal jazz.
